How Do Magnets Work?
Magnets are fascinating objects that produce invisible magnetic fields, attracting certain metals like iron, nickel, and cobalt. Their power comes from the alignment of electrons in their atoms. In magnetic materials, electrons spin in the same direction, creating a tiny magnetic field. When billions of these aligned atoms group together, they form magnetic domains, generating a strong overall field.
There are two main types: permanent magnets (like fridge magnets) and electromagnets (temporary magnets created by electricity). Permanent magnets retain their magnetism, while electromagnets only work when current flows through a coiled wire around them.
Interestingly, Earth itself is a giant magnet, with a magnetic field extending from its core. This is why compass needles point north—they align with Earth’s magnetic poles!
